Sometimes the soft error is returned intentionally as an annoyance to
 spammers. Especially if a server is hit with lots of dictionary spam
 attempts. It gums up the works, so to speak.

Of course, one of the side effects is the problem being discussed
here. It's a pain. But, something to consider, if you are providing
backup services for these other people then it is in their interest
to help you with this. Perhaps an hourly or daily cron job that
exports the list of valid users from their system to yours, so you
know who to accept mail for and who you can just reject.

Spammers also frequently hit backup MX servers instead of the
primaries for just this very reason. Often backups accept all mail.
That's why I don't like providing backup MX services unless I have a
valid user list.

Well, spam is a general problem, but if the messages would be rejected with a
550 error, it's not a problem on the fallback server. Maybe setting up
spamassassin on the fallback server can help me out here.
