The most notable missing feature is kernel pre-emption which is
supposed to be a good thing for routers; I have not tested it yet.

Has anyone else got feedback on this feature? Maybe it's not worth
fussing over?

I would think that TSL left it out because it's too new a new feature
and not needed for general applications.

I have deleted the kernel package from my router so I can't dig
through config-*, but lack of pre-emption (and missing serial port drivers
in the early release) were enough to cause me to build a kernel for now.

Switching from 2.2 with a 2.4 kernel to 3.0 with 2.6 has been mostly
a big yawn, which is exactly the way I want it: it works better and
there have been no strange unexpected arbitrary changes.

Can't you see that on the dust jacket? In 36 pt type: "3.0 is big yawn".
