last time I tried installing pear db on a fresh box, this issue hit me 
as well.. the problem is the php rpm installs a non-functional registry..
to fix it, I copied the pear folder from an older box, where pear was 
working.

I have no idea what the proper fix is, or why the rpm is/was bugged.
