just another shot in the dark:

is smtp in /etc/services ??

grep smtp /etc/services ...

matthias
ps: and output of ps aex would give the check for processes ...
and when you're on it, post lsof and netstat -a -n as well (they show  
the same stuff, but it might be easier to spot if we read it twice ..
