It seems that during a recent upgrade to the PHP packages pear's registry ( /usr/lib/php/.registry ) has been clobbered. This causes problems when trying to install / upgrade extra pear modules - pear now complains the module either is or isn't installed depending whether you're trying to install or upgrade. Not terribly helpful :)
