Nothing related in /var/log/messages or any other logs? If there are no
other errors relating to saslauthd itself I'd suspect a segfault.

The packages was upgraded Aug 29.

Don't really see that nscd could cause much harm as it just a simple cache.

I run same setup as you, but with authdaemond instead of saslauthd since
I use courier.
