About 1350 EUR here.
One big advantage of using linux md always was easy monitoring (just check changes on /proc/mdstat and send email alert), and the ease of remote management. Don't know how to do this with hw raid cards.
Better. Way better. And more reliable.
When I have a throughput of say 20Mb/s total on my raid set, that would be fast enough for this system, as it is used by only one client. I think that should not be a problem with cheap sata ports combined with linux md.
Well, depends on how important the data is. And 20 Mb/s is quite slow for such a setup. AND you will have quite some CPU overhead for the raid... And you need to lookout for splitting the disks across the PCI busses. and so on, and so on. AND you WANT 64bit PCI-X or even better pci-e.
As i said. If you want cheap, and dont care about speed, reliability etc, then go ahead with your planned setup. Otherwise, take a look at
http://www.infortrend.com/main/2_product/a24u-g2421.aspor maybe the iscsi versions, that would have the benefit of not having to buy a server at all.
And thats EOD for me, who am i to stop people running towards problems :) Danny -- Q: Gentoo is too hard to install = http://www.cyberdelia.de and I feel like whining. = [EMAIL PROTECTED] A: Please see /dev/null. = (from the gentoo installer FAQ) = \o/
