I think Compaq/HP intentionally made the DLxxx series considerably un-Linux friendly. I always have a Hellish time installing any distro. There are some tricks, mostly involving SCSI driver module experimentation. Fedora seems to handle it well. I have luck configuring the drive(s) with Fedora and then installing another.
