I don't see why you should be, unless cyrus is being difficult..
With Courier, I just set up courier-authd to use (pg)sql, and I was done

I have absolutely no experience with cyrus (except that I have had 
problems with cyrus-sasl, needed for smtp auth)

In my setup (should be documented on the wiki), courier is talking to 
the database to retrieve user info - All configuration is kept in one 
single location (the DB) making the administrative overhead smaller.
