With the start of classes encroaching upon us, I thought it might be a good time for TSLUG members to begin thinking about what they want to do with their fall. If you have been following the summer's News for Nerds, then you'll know that the first criminal arrest was made under the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA). If not, you'll be interested in: http://www.boycottadobe.com/ I think it is safe to say that most "regular people" don't even know what the DMCA is or why it might be a bad idea. It is likely that the most they see is "Russian Hacker Arrested" in the paper and believe this is a good thing. It might be reasonable for TSLUG to help people understand what's going on here. On a related note, since this current "legal situation" concerns e-books, it has gotten me to think about the Gutenberg project (a volunteer effort to make public domain works freely available electronically). Think of your favorite classic work published before 1923 and there is a good chance that it is in the Gutenberg project. Most "mere mortals" probably don't know about this, and it would make another opportunity for TSLUG to do a little education; particularly since the books are free, and a lot of money-deprived college students will need to read many of them during their time at Truman. The Gutenberg project would also be a good opportunity to do some volunteering. There is a distributed proofreading site at http://charlz.dynip.com/gutenberg/ where you can proofread scanned books a page at a time. You might also have a talk/presentation for the fall that you would like to make... -- Don Bindner <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
