Might I suggest using partimage to make an image of your kiosk on a CD
so that when people goof it up it will be easy for you to restore.
Also I believe that it should be fairly easy now to make it
authenticate against the Windows domain and automatically mount
people's Y: drives as /home/%username%.  Take a look at Mandrake 9 as
it has NT Domain Authentication built into the setup program now.
