I want to clear up some misunderstandings about the pipeline portal system. First, if you go to http://its.truman.edu you will notice on the right-hand side the news section. Click on that. Under date: 8/4/2003 you will notice the Campus Pipeline Upgrade Status. Click on that. You will notice that it reads, and I quote "The Campus Pipeline upgrade last week was unsuccessful and will be rescheduled at a later date." This means that we are back to where we started. This notice did not go up until today because we were hopping to let everyone know when the rescheduled upgrade will take place at the time when we reported that it had not yet happened. However, because of the current situation, we have put this up on the news right away.
This is not most of the issue that we are discussing here, but what I am saying is that nothing has changed for the better or worse regarding the pipeline system. As for Dr. Bindner's comments about the ITS people, he demonstrates his lack of understanding for the current situation. The reason that Pipeline was checking for browser versions was so that ITS would not be responsible to support browsers which work only partially under Campus Pipeline. Mozilla and others work mostly with Pipeline, but not fully. Some features do not work. These include moving messages, some calendaring functions and other small issues. The reason that we did not disable the browser check was for this reason. We decided that the URL to access Pipeline from Mozilla was widely enough known that we could let people use it as long as they did not expect support. However, this has been changed, at least for now. I have been told that Mozilla has been added to the list of allowed browsers(I just checked - it works fine). I believe that Dr. Bindner approached this situation in a very unfortunate way. Flaming ITS over the TSLUG list hurts the reputation of TSLUG more than you might realize. When I came into work today, I was told that the department here does know about the message. Many people are very upset about the way in which this was handled. If Dr. Bindner or anyone else would like to discuss these or other issues, they are very easily handled one-on-one with someone who works in ITS. I would be glad to discuss issues like these, and at least tell you where ITS is coming from. I could go on, but I think that you get my point. Please direct any flames to myself personally instead of the list. One-on-one is the way handle these types of issues, not over a list.
