My question is, what distro should I be using if I want newer than stable software and good package management, And I don't care about compiling my own unless I have to?
Since you're capable of working within the Linux system, Gentoo is the obvious choice...very up-to-date, and the emerge package system is just as, if not more, powerful than the Debian apt system. The two systems are very very similar...but you can get the newest latest and greatest versions of everything on Gentoo without any modification. Gentoo is constantly update the packages to stay current, too. The only other real difference I can think of is that Gentoo is more optimized, which is kind of the point of Gentoo. :p Everything from the very optimizing install to the optimized kernels all lead to a very optimized system. Prelinking can also make it even faster, if you need it.
Before everyone starts hammering on SuSe and its evil closed-ness, I'd like to say that I am very fond of the distro. It may not be for the hardcore Linux user that prefers a system like Debian or Gentoo, but it is great system for someone fairly new to Linux. It has a very very easy install, but it is also fairly up-to-date. The YAST package system has a X interface that makes it easy for new users to install, uninstall, and upgrade their packages. It is generally the same as RH and Mandrake...perhaps slightly more current and slightly less binary-proprietary... It does support RPMs.
I am so done.
So is your Debian install! Gentoo is calling to you.
Conveniently, Nate and I have been discussing these topics...and I said something about Gentoo being better because of all the optimizations, which Nate responded to with:
[01:50:04] mcngreen: all your optimize are belong to us
How witty...
