Hello, readers. This is the holiday-delayed Linux Newsletter, a weekly
review of the open source administration, development, and usage
information published on the O'Reilly Network.
As mentioned last week, we're running another ONLamp.com reader survey; If
you tell us a little about yourself and your open source habits, we'll
keep that in mind when setting future editorial direction -- and you might
win a few free books, too. If you're interested, please take the August
2004 ONLamp.com reader survey.

Now for this week's new articles.
One story from the early days of Unix indicates that it gained a foothold
among people doing printing and publishing. Aside from patent and
licensing concerns over color matching, Howard Wen discovered that the
stability, power, and flexibility of free Unixes make them attractive
platforms for modern publishing too. His Scribus: Open Source Desktop
Publishing explores a mature, open source desktop publishing program
that's seen a lot of successes recently.

It seems like just yesterday that every mention of Linux in the press was
exciting and new. In those heady days, Linux Today was a pioneer of Linux
news. Tom Adelstein recently interviewed the founder of LT who's
re-entering the fray with a new project. Read more in Dave Whitinger:
Inventing Linux News Reporting.

One of the most frustrating parts of database work is in executing queries
that contain bad data. Dan Tow's Wrong-Errors Bugs: A New Class of Bug?
argues that database vendors should add a new type of error reporting to
their systems to alert you to a situation where things just aren't quite
right.

Finally, our book excerpt this week comes from Python In a Nutshell and
Learning Python, 2E. A Python Quick Reference to Useful Commands is a
printable reference card to operators and common methods.

In our weblogs this week, Steve Mallet points to An OSDir interview with
Brian Ingerson[1], Ted Wallingford compares Skype to iChat[2], Nat
Torkington explores KDE and Database Software[3], David Bricker despises
pop-up ads on TV[4], Chuck Toporek questions punctuation marks inside or
outside quotes[5], Uche Ogbuji praises Guido the Benevolent Dictator For
Life[6], Derrick Story finds MSN Music sounds flat[7], and Ming Chow
promotes GMail Accounts for Troops[8].

ONLamp.com and Linux Devcenter Top Five Articles Last Week
1. Scribus: Open Source Desktop Publishing
Desktop publishing came of age in the '80s, but open source options
concentrated mostly on TeX and LaTeX. For users who want a friendlier
interface, Scribus aims squarely at PageMaker and QuarkXPress. Howard Wen
explores the features of Scribus and talks to its developers.

2. Building a Unix Server
Building a new server is always a little exciting -- you have the chance
to make a fresh start, with good intentions and everything. But if it
never ends up that nicely, take some tips from Dru Lavigne, who explains
how she sets up Unix servers.

3. PHP Form Handling
If your PHP program is a dynamic web page (and it probably is) and your
PHP program is dealing with user input (and it probably is), then you need
to work with HTML forms. David Sklar, author of Learning PHP 5, offers
tips for simplifying, securing, and organizing your form-handling PHP
code.

4. A Python Quick Reference to Useful Commands
Plucked from the pages of Python in a Nutshell and Learning Python, 2nd
Edition, these excerpts, available for download as a PDF (55K), offer a
quick reference to useful Python commands, covering methods, common file
operations, and much more. Print it out to keep by your keyboard as you
program.
