Hello, Perl.com fans. This is the Perl.com newsletter, a
biweekly (or so) romp through Perl news and Perl.com articles.

* Perl News

"This Week on perl5-porters" celebrated its fifth anniversary
on October 17, five years to the day after the release of Perl
5. Yes, that means Perl 5 celebrated its tenth anniversary
recently:

http://use.perl.org/article.pl?sid=04/10/20/0922250&tid=12

The Parrot team announced the Parrot 0.1.1 release, narrowly
missing what your editor hoped would be a scary-in-a-good-way
Halloween release:

* Perl.com Articles

The past few weeks have seen several good articles. The first
one resurrects the Far More Than You Ever Wanted To Know About
acronym. Though many people use Perl to automate tasks, drive
powerful web sites, and even build applications, it's as much
at home on the command line as are the venerable awk and sed
tools. Geoff Broadwell walks through plenty of options for
bulk file editing with Perl. If you process text, you may
find some time-saving ideas here:

http://www.perl.com/pub/a/2004/10/14/file_editing.html

For those of you who haven't yet caught the test-driven
development antibody, "Perl Code Kata: Testing Taint" presents
a small exercise to strengthen your testing muscles and deepen
your knowledge of Perl tainting in thirty minutes or less.
Page two has spoilers, though:

http://www.perl.com/pub/a/2004/10/21/taint_testing_kata.html

Having mentioned Perl applications a couple of paragraphs ago,
one rough spot that many larger programs encounter is the
installation and configuration process. Installing lots of
modules--including optional dependencies--can take a lot of
time. David Wheeler explains how Bricolage, the powerful
publishing CMS, does it in "Installing Bricolage":

http://www.perl.com/pub/a/2004/10/28/bricolage_installation.html

Finally, the venerable Piers Cawley has stepped down as
overworked Perl 6 summarizer. The optimistic (and probably
now less wide-eyed but no less overwhelmed) Matt Fowls has
taken his place, with the debut, "This Fortnight in Perl 6,
October 2004":

http://www.perl.com/pub/a/2004/10/p6pdigest/20041017.html

* Conclusion

That's all for this newsletter. Upcoming articles include a
look at ActiveState's Komodo 3.0 and ways to avoid programs
overwhelming your server.

See you in two weeks,

Study Shows Safari Saves Time
http://safari.oreilly.com/

A recent study by The Ridge Group of Princeton, New Jersey found that
Safari Bookshelf delivers savings of about 24 times its cost. The group
found that without the use of an Electronic Reference Library (ERL),
the typical technology professional spends an average of 31 hours per
month looking for answers, researching issues, and helping colleagues
do the same. Safari subscribers, however, report an average of 13.5
hours saved per month--nearly half the amount of time lost by people
who don't subscribe.

Installing Bricolage
Though CPAN makes it possible to write large and powerful
applications, distributing those applications can prove daunting.
In the case of the Bricolage content management system, though,
David Wheeler's installation guide here will walk you through
the process.

Perl Code Kata: Testing Taint
Persistently practicing good programming will make you a better
programmer. It can be difficult to find small tasks to practice,
though. Fear not! Here's a 30-minute exercise to improve your
testing abilities and your understanding of Perl's taint mode.

FMTYEWTK About Mass Edits In Perl
Though it's a full-fledged programming language now, Perl still
has roots in Unix file editing. A hearty set of command-line
switches, options, and shortcuts make it possible to process
files quickly, easily, and powerfully. Geoff Broadwell explains
far more than you ever wanted to know about it.
