Dear Reader,

Technology's impact on the world of audio is as profound as in movies,
photography, and retail. For what was once the price of a few days in a
commercial recording studio, artists can purchase their own mixing
software and hardware to produce CD-quality music.

After their projects are completed, they're no longer beholden to the
major labels for promotion and distribution of their songs. Independent
labels and the power of the internet have leveled the playing field. As a
result, I believe we're entering a new era in music artistry.

Back in October, we added an audio section to our Digital Media site. I
hired David Battino, respected music journalist, to provide O'Reilly
readers with articles about the art and technology of digital audio. Most
of these pieces include music downloads so you experience the techniques
discussed in the articles.

The audio site also includes daily news, a directory of artists and
services, and weblogs written by O'Reilly experts.

If you want to keep apace with today's evolving audio universe, I think
you'll enjoy a visit to our Digital Media site
(http://digitalmedia.oreilly.com/).

Until next week,

-Derrick

The Evolution of ePayment Services at UB
Perl is often a workhorse behind the scenes, content to do its job quietly
and without fuss. When the University of New York at Buffalo needed to
offer electronic payment services to students, the Department of Computing
Services reached for Perl. Jim Brandt describes how Perl (and a little
Inline::Java) helped them build just enough code to allow students to pay
their bills online.

Distributed Enterprise Messaging with MantaRay
Java Messaging Service (JMS) is a much-used system for distributed

that creates bottlenecks. MantaRay implements the JMS API through a

significant advantages.
