Greetings...
Clusters are great in theory: you scale by just throwing another box into
the rack mount and maybe changing some config files. But is it really that
simple? Are you completely absolved of responsibility for how you code
your web application, and can you expect that all clusters will handle all
web applications equally well? Put that way, of course it sounds silly.
It's only natural that some styles of programming will work well in a
cluster, and some won't.
Srini Penchikala returns to the topic of Tomcat 5 Cluster performance this
week, as he tests the performance of session replication under different
scenarios in Session Replication in Tomcat 5 Clusters, Part 2. By tweaking
the session manager, the replication mode, and the size of the data to be
replicated, he illustrates significant differences in how quickly sessions
can be replicated among nodes of the cluster, which you'll want to keep in
mind both for configuring your cluster and in terms of how much data per
session you want to replicate across the cluster.

The desire to relate XML documents is a natural one, and if you use XML
Schema, it's fairly straightforward with the Java Architecture for XML
Binding (JAXB). In Generating an XML Document with JAXB, Deepak Vohra
shows how to create Java classes from XML Schema and how to create XML
documents from those classes.

Elliotte Rusty Harold, author of Java Network Programming, 3rd Edition
took a few minutes recently to talk with your editor about recent
developments in Java networking, including IPv6, multicast, bugs and
mis-features, and his hopes for an open source Java, sooner rather than
later. All this and more can be found in the interview, A Distributed
Discussion with Elliotte Rusty Harold.

In this week's feature article from java.net, What's Happening with
Jetspeed 2?, Navaneeth Krishnan talks with David Sean Taylor, who's been
involved with the Jetspeed portlet project for almost four years. With
Jetspeed-2, it's fair to ask "what's new?" David's answer: " Everything :)
Jetspeed-2 is a complete rewrite of Jetspeed-1. It is the next-generation
enterprise portal at Apache Portals. It's hard to pick out the coolest new
feature. Some may think that the component architecture and Spring
integration, others like CMS-based navigation model, and others like the
standardization of portlet development. Personally, what is cool to me is
the new community at Apache Portals, and how Jetspeed-2 fits into that
community as the enterprise portal."
