Greetings...

We've launched two new series on ONJava this week, both of which intend to
cover a complex subject in significant depth. But don't worry--the
introductory articles will always be a click or two away, so as the two
series progress, you'll be able to catch yourself up without too much
trouble.

Eclipse is a hugely popular IDE for Java development, but it's so much
more than that. The plug-in based architecture of Eclipse offers many
possibilities for customization and, as Emmanuel Proulx notes, many points
of entry for plug-in developers: "some Eclipse users will want to
customize it. Some will develop tools for their company's employees. Some
will want to sell tools that connect to their products. Some will want to
resell Eclipse under another name with these tools pre-installed." In
"Eclipse Plugins Exposed, Part 1: A First Glimpse," he describes the basic
architecture of Eclipse and how to start building your own plug-ins.

Denis Pilupchuk, author of O'Reilly's "Java vs. .NET Security" eDocument,
has turned his attention to WS-Security and how it really works in the
enterprise: "ever since the inception of the commercial Internet, there
have been attempts (some more successful than others) to form generic B2B
automated processing chains. In such a setting, each participating web
service will in turn be acting as a server and then as a client, when it
issues a request to the next element of the chain." And from a security
standpoint, when each link in the chain may introduce new
incompatibilities in handling credentials, building a working and secure
chain gets very difficult. "WS-Security in the Enterprise, Part 1:
Problem Introduction" lays out the problem and identifies the steps needed
to resolve it.

If you're not using J2SE 5.0 yet (sorry, Mac developers), you're missing
out on variable-length argument lists or "varargs," which not only let you
offer your callers a more flexible means of calling your code, they also
enable 5.0's new C-like text formatting. You can learn more about them in
the excerpt from Chapter 5 of Brett McLaughlin and David Flanagan's "Java
5.0 Tiger: A Developer's Notebook," which is presented as a 190KB PDF file
to maintain the unique style and "all lab, no lecture" approach of the
Developer's Notebook series.

This week's feature article from java.net is Erik Hatcher's "Lucene
Intro," which shows you how to index, analyze, and search your files in
order to provide powerful search capabilities for your application. As he
notes, "Yahoo was the first high-profile categorized view of the Internet.
More and more, though, users demand the flexibility of free form queries
which cuts across rigid category boundaries, as proven by the popular
reliance on search engines like Google. If users are demanding these
capabilities of your applications, Lucene is quite possibly the best
answer!"
