IMHO, scripting is not the answer. The whole point of a rigorous build tool is to _avoid_ scripting by users. The build tool should handle everything necessary to implement all of the basic feature set. And, again IMHO, variants are in that basic feature set due to the need to support multiple build confiurations and multi-platform builds.
