Lua, as a fully featured programming language, is more powerful than the default Lua parser.

If you feel the current syntax is expressive enough for your purposes, there's no reason to use Lua. I've found it a great help abstracting common behavior in my projects.

pretty language agnostic, and without lua it's pretty easy to understand.  So
