Thanks - I suspected something like this.  The "preload" mechanism might be 
a way to get past this obstacle, but if I understand it correctly, it can 
only be used to access directories within the Tup hierarchy (i.e., 
directories underneath the parent directory of .tup).  Is this correct?

Anything else I can try?
