This is mostly a question out of curiousity, but what is the utility of
&-variables? I used to think that they were very useful, but then I learned
that they could be substituted by $(TUP_CWD) and in the process be made
much more powerful. For example, what is the meaningful difference between:

A = $(TUP_CWD)/file
&B = file

I know that internally &B actually references the database object, whereas
$A is just a string, but in any context they'll ultimately resolve to the
same string in the command. In addition, $A can be used in more places and
can contain multiple pieces of information, e.g. A = $(TUP_CWD)/file1
$(TUP_CWD)/file2, where with &-variables you'd have to make two independent
ones and type them out. Am I missing some utility of &-variables that I
haven't considered?

Thanks,
Erik
