SapDB is closer to a real RDBMS engine than other open-source DB's. For a
feature list, see
http://www.sap.com/solutions/technology/sapdb/framesets/sap_db_features.htm.

It has been around and developed since 1994 and has about 600 production
sites. The biggest selling point to me is the configuration options that
allow for scaling up. You can configure the memory to allow for more
"optimized" usage. The architecture of the db allows for separation of
datafiles that commonly cause I/O contention. It offers good backup with
"roll forward" capabilities. The sql optimizer will not only follow certain
rules, but also look at live data statistics to determine the execution
plan. Deadlock detection, row-level locking, Unicode support, datafile
mirroring, ...

The main downside is the cost of configuration and maintenance. Something
like 150 plus configuration options that can be tuned.

than other db's?

Thanks
