+1, the cascade rocks when it works. Another possibility is to process the canonical stylesheet at build time. Either by patching it or by having some velocity directives in it. This might make it easier for people to use the canonical stylesheet but change some more pervasive design elements (basic colors, border styles, et cetera). I haven't looked at the style-sheet in any detail though so I don't know how hard that would really be. I think a combination of these approaches is ideal. Anything that can be done (easily) with the cascade should.
