maven's startup time

most often, there is a delay of nearly 10 seconds before compilation of my project begins using maven. i was just wondering what is going on during those first 10 seconds and if a 10 second delay after seeing the maven text logo and before seeing "java:compile:" is normal?

i'm using jdk1.4.1_01 (hotspot), win2k (sorry), and an athlon 1800+ (512mb mem)...
