An example of what I've whipped up so far...

All feedback appreciated (and yes I do know that the layout sucks!)

Internally, the process is as follows

1. Read torque schema (uses a JAXB XML marshaller - it's what I know and 
requires 1 line of code)
2. Convert torque schema to internal schema representation (so system is 
independant of Torque - and allows more encapsulation)
3. Configure a renderer (currently SVGERReport)
4. Run the layout engine (which has to know about the renderer to get 
sizes etc) - currently it just uses grid layout
5. Render layed out items to Graphics2D and thus to SVG by virtue of 
Batik (xml.apache.org/batik)
6. ...
7. Fame and fortune!
