If it is agreed that this change should be pre-v3 release, I would
like to suggest I supply my patch "as it is" with some notes
as to questions/problems that are found or caused by the change
 to be resolved as part of the v3-beta/v3.x cycle. This would
allow more eyes to get on this code sooner, and allow this
"last breaking change before v3" to get in place.

I will be subbing a few small pre-patches shortly. These
patches are not specifically for this change, but are used
by the change.

Please give me some guidance on how to best proceed getting
this change in place!

One other thought - will placing a feature freeze on v3 allow
a branch to be started for v4? or better yet, tag v3 and branch
v3-patch to allow v4 dev to begin?
