    I got it working finally. Your advice was correct. I used
jdbc:mysql://localhost:3306/mocha?useUnicode=true&characterEncoding=SJIS

Also - the problem was tomcat was giving the data in ISO 8859_1. I had to
convert it to SJIS and then store it.
