I still trying to learn what the big pay off is. OJB big advantage is has a lot of good documentation. They are also working on a JDO version. This is where my intrest lies. The only problem I had with OJB, I could be confused on this, but appeared to require changing your database schema. I don't like or agree with that. Torque does the same thing via an XML mapping file. My problem is that that niether seem to have any tools to support doing all of the tedious work. They also seemed to expect that you would be starting with a new project. There seems to be little support, at least now, for using this to wrap an exsiting database. This is where tools are big deal. I don't want to write XML mappings! I don't even trust myself to write XML mappings. If I have an existing database schema I want Torque or OJB to make the dang mapping for me. Torque needs to support more complex mappings. I needed to use a query and create a read-only set of objects. This isn't option right now. I didn't really explore this with OJB, so I can say where it fits. This is just my understanding of the projects. If there something I wrong about, please correct me. I just getting up to speed on them. There is another project called basejDAO. This is project is just starting, but you can check it out at www.basebeans.com/downloads.jsp It slowing being move into Open Source. This is a much thiner layer than Torque, Castor or OJB.
