I had this same problem when I first started with jdbc/mysql.
You may need to add extra entries into the USER table in the mysql
schema/database:
localhost.localdomain
locahost
127.0.0.1
All three may be overkill, but I could never figure exactly how it was
connecting.
Put these entries in and it will work.
