Doh! I stand corrected. :-)
However, the whole part about OSS is very important...
Before I started working on Turbine, I spent quite a bit of time working
with Everyware corp. trying to get their Tango product to do what I needed
it to. In fact, they eventually gave me the phone number of their lead
developer who I spent many hours with tracking down bugs in his software and
getting him to add features that I needed. Even still, this wasn't enough
because when it came down to it, the product was still buggy and still
needed features that I wanted. The other problem with the tool was that
because it was a GUI builder and made things "easy" any time that I wanted
to do something "out of the box" with it, I was forced to write some sort of
external system that executed outside of the context of their product. There
was no way that I could just go in an modify the product directly.
My company at the time (ClearInk) also had a bad experience with other
products like Intershop, Niku and some content management system I have long
forgotten the name of (and probably isn't around anymore).
After those experiences, I swore off commercial closed source webapp
software and started working on Turbine. Never again will I be subjected to
the dependency on someone else for my webapp software. It took years to get
to the point where there was something truly usable, but at this point,
Turbine is quite good and meets every single one of my needs and I don't
have to worry about whether or not I can extend it to do what I want.
Thanks,
-jon
