Okay, just to make sure I was not doing anything too dumb,
(entirely likely) I made a copy of the newapp folder in /webapps
and tried to compile the FluxLogin.java in the actions/ folder of
the src/ directory with the actions/ folder as the target in the class/
directory. This is the compiler error:
...FileItem.java:86: cannot resolve symbol
symbol : class DataSource
location : class.org.apache.turbine.util.upload.FileItem
public class FileItem implements DataSource
^
The WEB-INF/lib directory is there and complete
and I am using the tdk 2.1 version of Catalina
I have not modified any of the files.

No question is a silly question, but a vague question doesn't really
help
much. I can't even try to help you with the info you've given.
Are you using the sample app as a base? Did you start from scratch? Did
you
copy the sample app directory and possibly miss some JARs in the
WEB-INF/lib
directory? The activation jar in particular? Do you have your own
version of
Tomcat installed? Are you altering the classpath in the tomcat scripts?
Give me some details and I'll try to give you some help.
