Yeah... I hooked it up in httpd.conf as the instructions said with:
WebAppConnection conn warp localhost:8008
WebAppDeploy mywebapp conn /uw
And with that when I hit the URL with a browser it just waits until
eventually timing out... Turbine is running when I hit it's port directly
though.

I have got it working at one of my clients of just fine. I will try and get
the http.conf for you as there should be really no modifications (that I can
remember) to your web.xml/server.xml to get it to work.
