This will give you an idea of how page flow is handled within turbine. However here is a quickie explanation to get you started: Basically, $screen_placeholder is where the requested template will be placed within regards to the surrounding/parent layout. This is a WAY over-simplified explanation, but it should help get the gears movin' ;-) The link above has more granular explanation of how everything comes together with the Turbine view model.
