log4j configuration file

Greetings:

I am using tdk2.2.

log4j configuraton allows setting layout,
appender and log level for specific class.

Where should I put the configuration file?
log4j manual says it should be in 
WEB-INF/classes directory but it didn't work
whey I tried that. Calling configure("configfile")
of PropertyConfigurator is the correct way
to initiate log4j for my application?
