It is true that the lack of a clear direction is a severe problem with Turbine. However I think a book would be great that explains the various components and architectural ideas behind Turbine and how to build an app from that so that it fits the individual requirements. There is a book in German scheduled to be released in december called "Portale und Web-Applikationen mit Apache Frameworks". It covers the following [Excerpt from the editor]:
