It is doable... But maybe some work needs to be done? Are you trying to be able to leverage the data.getUser() capability, but not actually have security? In otherwords, everybody is a passive user?
What do you mean by signup? Does that mean insert a record in the TURBINE_USER table? Or does that just mean create a user object that has a firstname/lastname etc that is not perisisted?
