Our logs goes to stdout too and the commons-logging.jar file was also
version 1.0.3.
The solution was to replace that jar with the older one (1.0.2) and
voila! the logging output goes to the right file now.
If you got a different way to solve that issue, plz share.

Thanks, Cristian. I haven't really "solved" the issue, but didn't bother
too much about it afterwards because the problem vanished as soon as I
moved the application into the production server. Thought I'll do the
R&D on what makes this happen later when I find some free time which
hasn't happened so far though :-(
