Do I need maven??

hi, I am having an error with torque when running ant init on the sample 
app.
I'm using the distribution tdk2.3_01 available on the apache site, and I'm 
not using maven explicitly anywhere. In fact, I'm using ant 1.6.2 to build 
my projects.
Do I need maven anywhere despite the fact that I'm already using ant??
