I think so - my initial problem was to determine if the User object was being used - 
to know if I need to replace it.  I now see that the anonymous user is still a full 
blown individual user - just waiting to be fleshed out.  Thus with this solution, I 
see that its going to be the same user object - so I just use it.

Fine - although I'm not sure about point 3 of your solution, ie when to throw the 
exception.

I'll submit a patch and you can let me know if it is what you were thinking.
