Hi to all Turbiners

A quick introduction to Turbine's newest fans: partners Frank Conradie and
Leon Messerschmidt:

The two of us make up almost all of Opticode Software, a small (tiny,
actually!) South African based company focusing on the development of web
based applications, and currently also working towards becoming a true "open
source" company.

Our first development work was done using PHP, but we soon discovered its
limitations when it came to true enterprise web application development. We
then started investigating all available web technologies and finally
settled on developing a Java servlet and XML based web application
framework. Our first framework already used some Apache code: Xerces and
Xalan. As we discovered and explored more of the expansive Apache project,
it was inevitable that we wound up investigating Turbine next to our own
effort.

Recently we noticed lots of similarities between the architecture of our
(ex)framework ("Carbon") and the Turbine framework. We started to look at
the architecture in detail and also registered on the mailing list. You may
have noticed a message or two from us already :-). We quickly realized that
it would be much better to join the Turbine effort than to hack away on our
own. After all, we're only two people!

We'll probably start off by helping out with Turbine wherever possible (bug
fixes, testing, documentation, suggestions, etc.). If we receive the
blessing of the current project team we would also like to contribute some
of the features we used in our framework and that Turbine lacks. We have a
good generic interface to Index and Retrieval engines (like the open source
"Lucene" and the commercial "Excalibur RetrievalWare"), as well as some
Z39.50 code (which we're using to link to our local University's library
systems), and a couple of other bits and pieces.

Although we are pretty new to the open source movement, we are young and
willing to learn, and more importantly, we believe ABSOLUTELY in the open
source message and ideals. As such we'll do our best to be of value towards
what promises to be an excellent framework.

Lastly, although we're posting this to Turbine because that'll be our
primary focus, we'll also pop up on the Castor, ECS, Jetspeed, and other
related lists.

Sunny South African Greetings, the Opticode Team

Frank Conradie [Managing Director]
Leon Messerschmidt [Technical Director]
