Not that I would dare to suggest changing the policy (although I prefer the
java style as well), but I would like to bring your attention to the
following product:

Jindent, which you may download from:

http://home.wtal.de/software-solutions/jindent

With this tool, one may format any java document according to almost any
style. By default, Java conventions are used, but this tool can be easily
customized to Apache conventions by simply creating an appropriate template.
For those who are used to Apache conventions, this is not a problem. But the
beauty of this is that others may convert their work with just one click.
Moreover, I have noticed in ECS, that some documents do not obey the rules.
With this, we could quickly convert them.
