What the hell is JSR 053 you ask?
It is where the specifications for the Servlet API and JSP exist and are
discussed and determined at the larger corporate level with members from all
the big players. Essentially, this is a little private clubhouse that Sun
keeps all to itself even though the code is open source.
The reason I'm so happy about being let in is because it took me nearly 6
months of begging/pleading/yelling/screaming/kicking to be allowed in
because I would not sign their NDA nor pay the $100 for moral reasons that I
have (essentially, I'm working for them for free so I feel like I shouldn't
be constrained).
Anyway, I finally made it in under the fact that Apache Software Foundation
became a member of the JCP (Java Community Process) and signed the NDA for
me. The fee was already waived at a higher level based on complaints myself
and others had made. I still fully want to respect the NDA, but this just
prevented ME from having to sign it as an individual. :-)
What does this mean? It means that if you have servlet or JSP spec changes
that you want to see implemented, you have a person on your side (assuming
they are well defined changes). Because of the NDA, I cannot discuss
specifics with you about things that are being implemented or not, but I can
take input and help push it though.
Cool!
