ahh nope - it is a broken JVM :P. JVMs really shouldn't build a peer for
offscreen images. There are alternatives to generate a JPEG but all that
effort is put into C2 - thou I am sure if you want to put in effort someone
will give you access to relevent CVS tree to make the changes.
