What about putting two cols in the table, the first with a 
fixed width ("600" f.e.), and the second with "100%" width.

The standard text would go into the first column, and
an empty one would be added on the side.

The code samples would be in a column with colspan="2", 
so that they would extend as far as they must, but
the main text would stay fixed at 600.

Just a thought :)
