Variable: hello is undefined

I'm trying to setup my first webapp... but the template variable $hello
is not getting replaced according to it's value in the context
(org.webmacro.servlet.WebContext), .....
everything seems to be ok .... the page gets displayed except for the
$hello..
Anyone ??
