I am tempted to consider this a blocker for b6, since it's an API change.
Either we need to agree now, or we need to move this to 2.1. And I'm ok
with the proposed solution #3 if that's the current consensus.
I do think it's what users expect, and I want to support that. I'm a
little bit concerned about the magicality of it, but I don't see a super
clear solution that's less magical.
