I don't think this is a good plan. (I'm ignoring the ";)") We have a history of never abandoning backwards compatibility and I'm proud of that. If we abandon that once, then there'll be this ghost haunting us on every new change introduced or major version released. If needed, I'd hold the release of 2.0 to have the needed integration layer coded.
