Well, you can implement it. I have similar needs but don't need to have it as a "whole" but item-by-item update style.
And even for your mentioned scenario, I prefer to design my db to take item-by-item update(sort of draft). In this way, I can come back to my work without the need to say "save" while I am only half way done and need to go to toilet.
