Things usually remain dormant until most browsers catch on. Look at how long it took XMLHttpRequest to become mainstream. One thing E4X has going for it is the it is already an ECMA standard, and Microsoft appeared on the contributors list (along with BEA, AOL, Mozilla, Macromedia, and IBM).
